Exhibitions

Inauguration with free admission, subject to available seating capacity

The Post-Summer Workshops emerge in the context of the 10th edition of the Artistic Creation Support Program, Summer Workshops, in partnership with gnration (Braga), the CIAJG - International Center for Arts José de Guimarães (Guimarães), and Solar - Gallery of Cinematic Art (Vila do Conde). This year, following an open call to artists and collectives based in the Braga district or Vila do Conde municipality, four proposals from distinct origins, natures, and aesthetic horizons were selected to realize their projects during residency periods at the participating institutions, conducted this summer.

The second presentation of the Post-Summer Workshops will take place on October 12 at the International Center for Arts José de Guimarães, following the exhibition at gnration last September, and before moving to the Municipal Auditorium of Vila do Conde in February 2025.

In Guimarães, we will thus revisit the works of Sally Santiago, the duos Sofia Morim + Filipe Carvalho and Francisca Miranda + Inês Leal, as well as the trio composed of João Carlos Pinto, João Miguel Braga Simões, and José Diogo Martins. All of these works have been adapted and, at times, significantly transformed compared to their previous format to respond to the configuration of the new exhibition space, continuing the experimental nature foundational to the Summer Workshops.

Sally Santiago presents Visual Chronicles of Where I Was Not, an audiovisual installation that speculates on the nature of certain fictional and narrative places, through personal memories shared with the artist and the (re)creations of these in (new) memories that occupy and renew them. Sofia Morim and Filipe Carvalho exhibit the installation Ephemeral Consonances, proposing a meditation on water and its relational capacity, enhancing the sensory experience of visitors through contact with surfaces and liquid flows. Meanwhile, in Ouroboros, a work developed between cinema and video art, Francisca Miranda and Inês Leal critically examine the screen and television broadcasting, addressing the soundbite and its relation to popular proverbs, images, rituals, and sounds of diverse origins. Finally, musicians João Carlos Pinto, João Miguel Braga Simões, and José Diogo Martins recreate the performance +/- on the opening night, using percussion instruments, piano, and sound manipulation technology to explore different collective archetypes in the form of sonic and visual atmospheres that catalyze the audience into uterine and psychedelic states.

Overall, while characterized by a heterogeneity of stances, materials, and interests, all these projects unite in their capacity to challenge the rigidity and expectations typically attributed to certain artistic disciplines or media structures, as well as to specific symbolic or sensitive territories, constructing zones of affection susceptible to the reception and interaction with the concrete realities and subjective idiosyncrasies of each visitor. In this way, each work opens up as a space where spontaneous associations or tensions with other images, gestures, and ideas can materialize, allowing each visitor to define an individual and indistinct path. Between the experience of recognition and otherness, as well as fabulation and wonder.
