Ricardo III (Richard III)

Marco Paiva
Theatre

Ages 12+

Marco Paiva

Inspired by William Shakespeare, director Marco Paiva transforms the assassination of Ricardo III into the possibility of a rebirth for a more diverse theatre – one that is attentive and in dialogue with other languages and forms of expression. He draws on human brutality to find a happier, collective space, and on the physical non-normativity of a warlike, self-centred character to argue that normativity can lead to alienation and a lack of empathy. The story is the same, but it is told through the strength of two languages expressed in the power of the body – Portuguese Sign Language and Spanish Sign Language. Once upon a time, there was a Richard III who wanted badly to rule. He lied, betrayed, killed, and was killed.
