Alex Hitchcock Quintet
Ages 6 and up
Event
The introduction of international next-generation jazz musicians to the Portuguese public—broadening awareness of this musical genre and taking the pulse of its current state—is one of the main missions embraced by Guimarães Jazz. The Alex Hitchcock Quintet, led by a British saxophonist and composer whose musical path has drawn the attention of specialized critics, and composed of a group of promising instrumentalists, will fulfill this role in the 34th edition of the festival, representing the trends shaped by these new protagonists and the ideas they are exploring.
Originally from London and currently based in New York City, Alex Hitchcock is a musician known for his original and prolific work across various jazz contexts. The quintet format—a recurring structure in his compositional journey—marked his recording debut as a bandleader in 2018. Since then, this British saxophonist and composer has explored a wide range of musical projects, including: the Dream Band series—featuring a broad array of musicians such as Chris Cheek and Jason Brown in unique combinations performing Hitchcock’s compositions; the Same Moon Duo—co-led with guitarist Ant Law and expanded through collaborations with leading contemporary jazz musicians like Joel Ross, Linda May Han Oh, and Eric Garland; and the group AuB—co-led with saxophonist Tom Barford, which has released two studio albums to date. In addition to his work as a bandleader, Hitchcock is a frequent collaborator with emerging artists on the current jazz scene, including Maria Chiara Argiró and Jasper Høiby, and with large ensembles, having also contributed as a composer and arranger for the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the BBC Big Band.
Born in the U.S. state of New Hampshire, Dave Adewumi is a Nigerian-American trumpeter based in New York City, with an impressive academic background that began at the New England Conservatory and continued with music studies under Vijay Iyer at Harvard and through the Juilliard Jazz Masters Program, where he studied under Wynton Marsalis. Adewumi is currently a highly sought-after instrumentalist in contemporary jazz and, despite his youth, already boasts an impressive record of collaborations with major figures in the field, such as Jason Moran—in the Bandwagon’s Absence of Ruin project—and Dave Douglas—as part of his Engage and Dizzy Atmosphere groups.
Will Barry is a young multi-instrumentalist—pianist, drummer, and percussionist—based in London and a graduate of the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. His work in jazz includes participation in the Fellow Creatures project led by Danish bassist Jasper Høiby, a quartet alongside Jonny Mansfield, Will Sach, and Luke McCarthy, and work developed during his time living in Spain, where he performed in an expanded ensemble formed by Mario Rossy, Madison McFerrin, Perico Sambeat, and a group of Cuban musicians. He also collaborates regularly with Alex Hitchcock, both as a member of his quintet and in the context of the Dream Band series.
Originally from Rochester, bassist/double bassist and composer Ben Tiberio began his professional jazz career in Miami, where he completed his musical studies and took his first creative steps before permanently relocating to New York City in 2015. Over the past decade, Tiberio has established himself as a notable presence in the current New York jazz scene through collaborations with leading artists of his generation such as Joel Ross, Immanuel Wilkins, Veronica Swift, María Grand, and Ari Hoenig. In addition to his collaborative work, Ben Tiberio released a solo album (Rare Peace, 2021) and remains active in various projects, including the free/fusion jazz trio Hovercraft with saxophonist Omri Abramov and drummer Evan Hyde.
Ananda Brandão is a Franco-Brazilian percussionist with a sophisticated and wide-ranging musical education, including classical piano studies at the Conservatoire d’Antony and jazz composition training at the Royal Academy of Music. Her focus on percussion led her to deepen her expertise in this area, studying with André Charlier at the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood and attending masterclasses led by renowned drummers Kendrick Scott and Airto Moreira. Her creative résumé includes co-leading various projects, such as the ensemble Ninanda with pianist Nina Gat, as well as collaborations with Brazilian percussionist Marco Lobo and organist and singer Rhoda Scott.
