SATURDAY FEBRUARY 28, 9:30 PM
A Colónia
Ages 14 and up
Event
Created as part of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, A Colónia (The Colony), by stage director and filmmaker Marco Martins, is a performance about the events that took place between June and August 1972 at an unprecedented summer camp for the children of political prisoners, held in a large house in Caldas da Rainha. Over the course of two weeks, 18 children aged between 3 and 14—deeply marked by their parents’ imprisonment and by a past of clandestinity, suffering, and solitude—learned, for the first time, how to play and how to be free.
Once again, Marco Martins brings together a cast that includes non-professional performers to create a piece rooted in the stories and lived experiences of the children of political prisoners, transforming them into an artistic work that goes beyond the biographical and documentary dimension, with music playing a decisive role.
A Colónia was a rare success at its premiere, with Culturgest in Lisbon sold out for two weeks and ten performances. The project was also presented at Teatro Nacional São João in Porto, where all performances sold out. This critical and public acclaim earned it the Golden Globe for Best Performance in the Theatre category in 2025.
Now it is Guimarães’s turn, and that of Centro Cultural Vila Flor, to host one of the most urgent performances reflecting on our collective memory and our future.
