The City We Inhabit

What would the city we want to live in look like? What places, values, and words could not be missing? In this workshop, participants are invited to imagine and build a cardboard city, town, or village together, reflecting on the concepts of community, belonging, identity, and citizenship. Each person will create a building or a community element, adding a message related to its function, the idea of home, or the values they would like to find in that place. The different constructions will then be joined by a road made of inspiring words, symbolizing the bonds that unite a community. In the end, the composition will result in a collective artistic installation, built from the ideas, words, and dreams of everyone.
From the Memory of an Exhibition to a New Creation
In 2019, Carlos Bunga presented the exhibition "Architecture of Life" at the Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (CIAJG). Among the exhibited works was a sculptural installation made of numerous cardboard boxes—a simple, everyday material that took on new shapes and meanings in the artist's hands. Drawing from the memory of that exhibition and the possibility of creatively transforming cardboard boxes, we invited artist Marta Mesquita to design and lead "The City We Inhabit." The workshop proposes a poetic approach to the city, public space, and housing, inviting participants to think about the places we share and what unites us as a community. No artistic experience is required. All you need is the desire to imagine, build, and share.
