Ídio Chichava

Vagabundus is a performance in which 13 performers dance and sing continuously through a Mozambican musical repertoire, both traditional and contemporary, drawing on gospel and Baroque motifs.

Mozambican choreographer Ídio Chichava explores migration through the prism of the body. Often regarded as either voluntary or forced, migration is an invisible wave, a human flow. The migrant is today's nomad, the coloniser, the explorer, but also the vagabond. To create the choreography, Chichava draws inspiration from the dance ritual of the Makonde people of Mozambique, which supports the expression of a global body through the fusion of dance and song. According to Chichava, only a body that dances and sings simultaneously can fully express itself and exist in synergy with others. The choreographer sees this global body as a forgotten natural human condition. The explosive impact of the dancing and the voices needs neither scenery, elaborate costumes nor lighting effects to move the audience.

For the choreographer, the emotional dimensions of dance are what matter most. For this reason, and in resonance with the phenomenon of migration, audience movement is free throughout the performance. Vagabundus is an open performance, with no precise beginning or end.
