Joy Hanford

A CANTARONA tells the story of a wicked woman. She is old, bent over, and ignored. She never gave in. Working alone in her cave, she gathers lost and forgotten objects, transforming them into stone to preserve the legacy of forgotten things—and of the untamed woman who kept their importance alive.

A CANTARONA represents women's work: its physicality, the weight of imposed expectations, and what can be achieved when a woman decides to say, Enough!

Like a lock without a key, a landfill, or a repository for precious objects lost over a lifetime, A CANTARONA collects everything that has been undervalued and deemed useless, outdated, neglected, covered in dust, or forgotten.

Yet A CANTARONA remains empty, waiting to be filled.

There is beauty in rediscovery. Treasures found again are magnificent.

A CANTARONA is now waiting to be discovered by you.

Created by an artist who has been forgotten, underestimated, and overlooked—an immensely talented artist who also happens to be a loud woman, unapologetic, and proudly untamed.

Project co-funded by the European Union through the NORTE 2030 Regional Programme
